Parasite invasions are recognized as a major threat to biodiversity, economies and food production, but there are significant challenges to mitigating these potential impacts. Parasite diversity is severely under-reported and invasions are rarely detected early enough for effective intervention. In this chapter, we focus on the bio-characteristics of invasive parasites: the measurable morphological, physiological and behavioural attributes, and additional phylogenetic, distributional and host range factors that mediate invasions. We map parasite bio-characteristics onto existing biological invasion frameworks focusing on each invasion stage (introduction, establishment and subsequent spread and impact). To promote the earlier identification and prioritization of threats from invasive parasites, we introduce a conceptual framework to understand the impacts of invasive parasites and to generate hypotheses for testing whether a non-random, predictable, subset of potential invaders are successful in overcoming the barriers between invasion stages.
