In this paper I argue that the economic and environmental focus of the climate change debate has overshadowed the significant social implications and almost completely ignored the gendered consequences. In order to shift global attention to the need for international and national social policy addressing these issues I present data on climate change and current and likely future gendered impacts. Firstly I discuss climate change and resultant extreme weather events, noting the human toll. Then, using the Australian drought as a case study, I draw particular attention to its gendered social impacts. Finally I argue for international and national policy to address the current and future gendered social implications of climate change.
