A decade has passed since HIV-2 was first described. With the more restricted geographic spread and reduced disease-causing potential of this virus, both basic and clinical research involving HIV-2 have been less extensive when compared with the more widespread and first described HIV-1. Not only is the study of HIV-2 impor-tant for the several million individuals infected with this virus, but research involving HIV-2 may also teach us important lessons in understanding the basic pathogenic mechanisms leading to AIDS in chronic retroviral infections. With this knowledge, new therapeutic options may be delineated. Furthermore, recent evidence of the par-tial protective immunity to HIV-1 infection when prior HIV-2 infection is present, prompts increased efforts to understand this second human AIDS virus.
