People have long ago discovered the effects of oil on the surface properties of water. 1, 2 Lisbon seamen dropped oil from their boats to suppress the breakers when they returned to the harbor. Bermudan divers used to spread oil on the surface of the water toYinon Rudich received his B. Sc. degree from Ben Gurion University and M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees in chemistry from the Weizmann Institute. Following postdoctoral work with AR Ravishankara at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, he joined the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he is presently a Professor of Chemistry at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Energy Research. His research interests include the chemistry of organic aerosols and of mineral dust, aerosol− climate interactions, and characterization of ambient atmospheric aerosols. Other interests include heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry and development of new analytical techniques for characterization of atmospheric particles.
