This book is one that has been sorely needed in the herbicide field by plant physiologists, botanists, and chemists. There is a continuous dissemination of data on the various herbicides scattered in a number of journals, and the author is to be commended for his organization of the pertinent information into one volume. Each class of herbicide is delegated a chapter, and in each chapter the author discusses the chemistry of the compounds, their effects on susceptible plants, and the physiology and biochemistry involved in their herbicidal effects. In addition to the better known herbicides, several experimental compounds are discussed. In order to understand the herbicides' mode of action, it would have been helpful if the author had included an introductory chapter on the botanical and plant physiological aspects of the various plant organs which are covered in the text. Some knowledge of the leaf structure, stem structure, xylem and phloem functions would have provided the readers with a clearer picture of how the herbicides perform their functions. An interesting chapter which should be of concern to the pharmacologists and the analytical chemists discusses the potentialities of combining two herbicides in a single application. Since not all the combinations are compatible, it would be well to know what action is desired before using such mixtures. It is possible to obtain synergistic as well as antagonistic activity in the mixtures.
