The editors of East Asian Ecocriticisms: A Critical Reader seek to broaden the stakes for ecocriticism by providing new perspectives on literature in East Asia. Their introduction frames the relevance of the volume using an “us-versus-them” logic where “us” includes those who live in East Asia and “them” includes those who do not (2). Fortuitously, the essays in the volume mostly eschew any such “we” in their interdisciplinary and theoretical essays on environmental literature. The majority of the contributors work equally with non-East Asian texts and theory. Many have trained outside of East Asia, and their expertise goes far beyond their residence or the original context and language of their subject. This reviewer is grateful to learn about these scholars' work not because they are in East Asia, but because they have insight into precisely what is at stake for this volume: how, when, and why do particular environmental concepts circulate? When is it necessary to examine ecocritical discourse from a national perspective? What is the role of culture in ecocriticism? How can we critically assess the many ecocritical concepts that have emerged in Anglo-American ecocriticism through analysis of East Asian cultural production?
