Time- and space-resolved spectroscopy of line emission from a laser-produced carbon plasma in a helium atmosphere indicates the presence of a previously undetected energetic (4 keV) neutral component preceding the normal highly-stripped ion expansion. Identification of the slab target region as the origin is supported by similar boron data. Absolute emission measurements indicate a density of 3 X 1013cm-3in the neutral expansion, for an equivalent current density of 40 A/cm2. Expansion of these neutrals in the helium gas is unattenuated, permitting identification ahead of the plasma blast wave.
