The application of new and more definitive methods to the study of the substance in the walls of blood vessels and in the tissues around such vessels, described in the past as fibrinoid, has shown an exactly similar response to dye as that of fibrin. Two of the new methods are capable of distinguishing this pseudo-collagen fibrin that no longer reacts as fibrin with the classical methods. The demonstration of fibrin by the MSB method is recommended; and staining both fibrin and collagen with visually strong but different colors, shows their relationship. When the relation of fibrin to elastic tissue is to be shown, the Yellosolve I method is recommended, or Slidders'' fuchsin-miller method. To show older fibrin the best method is the 44/41 Masson. For high-power color photomicrography on very thin sections of well-fixed tissue the picro-Mallory is suggested.
