Young rats were found satisfactory for experimental inoculation with Haem. pertussis by the intranasal route. The dose, in a volume of 0.05 cc. was delivered by a syringe with a blunt needle into the noses of animals anaesthetized with ether and was repeated if rhonchi were not felt. High mortality was produced by a smaller dose than is necessary for mice, the order of dose being 8.5 million organisms in the case of rats as against 200 million for mice. The rats developed a paroxysmal cough about 8 days after inoculation and those which did not die frequently continued to cough for as long as 60 days. 60-70 per cent., of the animals died before the 9th day and the lesions which are described in detail, consist of an interstitial broncho-pneumonia similar to that observed in mice. The organism can be recovered from the ground-up lungs in a high proportion of cases. J. C. Cruickshank.
