Heim and Bowles (2) 1 have described the occurrence of loessial deposits in the mountain valleys and on the high plateaus northwèst of Tachienlu, in the region commonly known as the Tibetan Borderland; but so far as we know, no-one has, reported any loessial material within the Szechuan Basin proper. W are not yet prepared to report such deposits with complete assurance, but we have collected data which seem to us strongly indicative that they exist and that they are distributed intermittently over a wide area in the western and northwestern parts of the Basin.During the autumn of 1935 we spent a few days studying these deposits together. Dye had previously observed them in a number of places over a period of many years, and had been puzzled as to the explanation of their probable origin. We therefore made a special effort to study them in the light of modern soil science with the hope of find-
