There is growing evidence that rates of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases are rising among young people, both in the Western world and elsewhere. This calls into question the failure of many HIV prevention policies globally. If existing information campaigns and condom distribution programmes do not work, then strategies must change and research into the importance of social influences on behaviour and risk taking is paramount. This review looks at what can be learnt from global trends in sexual behaviour in the heterosexual population and high-risk behaviours among homosexual and bisexual men. Topics covered include themes of sexual behaviour, the internet, obesity and body image and use of the drug crystal methamphetamine.
