Oxbow lakes have been recognized as important sources of rotifer diversiry. High rotifer diversiry has been reported from the flood plains of the River Niger, Nigeria (SEGERS et al. 1993), River Nan, Thailand (SANOAMUANG 1998) and River Murray, Australia (SHIEL et al. 1998). However, the nature of their vertical distribution throughout the water column is still poorly understood. The dynamics of the vertical distribution of the zooplankton communiry in a tropical oxbow lake were reported by FISHER et al. (1983) but the study focused only on larger zooplankton, especially cladocerans. The purpose of the present study was to observe the 24-h vertical distribution profiles of rotiferan communities from two different tropical oxbow lakes in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The distribution was interpreted based on environmental parameters in both lakes.
