N 22-23 March 1972 the Montreal area 0 was again struck by a severe ice storm. This event has been described as the most damaging ice storm ever experienced in the rural area just north of Montreal. Other severe storms in the Montreal area have been previously described in Weathemeke by Mahaffy (1961) and Trueman (1970). During and after the storm most essential services were disrupted for a period as long as a week. Three days after the beginning of the storm more than 20,000 families were still without electric power. Damages to public utilities were estimated at $1.5 million, but in addition to the storm crippling an extensive area, there were severe losses in frozen foodstuffs. At this time of the year, most farmers had stored their winter meat supply in home freezers and, when the freezers failed for lack of power, meat and other foodstuffs were spoiled.
