The level of presentation tends to vary from chapter to chapter. The chapter on “Mechanized Housekeeping,” for example, is considerably less sophisticated than sub-sequent chapters dealing with such topics as “Automatic Document and Query Classification,”“Storage Organization” or “Dynamic Information Processing.” This may be due to the strength of the author’s background and his research record in the latter areas. The subjects of other chapters include “Automatic Indexing and Extracting,”“Storage and Retrieval Sya tems,”“Library System Analysis,”“System Testing,” and “Language Processing.” Experimentation and experience with the SMART system are greatly emphasized throughout, but there is also considerable coverage of the literature with extensive bibliographies appended to each chapter. On the whole, this is a competent and scholarly publication that summarizes a significant amount of material in information processing. Perhaps the most profitable way of using it is on a chapter-by-chapter basis, when informative and up-to-date summaries of the various topics are needed.
