Stellar observers in the ultraviolet tend to use the MK classification system as a spectral reference also in this spectral range, implying that it characterizes the whole spectrum, even if it is defined only from the visible range. However, an analysis of about two thousand spectra collected by the S2/68 experiment on board the TD1 satellite showed that stars which are spectrally normal in the visible range do not always behave normally in the ultraviolet range (see Cucchiaro et al., 1976, 1977, 1978a, b, 1979, and 1980).
