For the purposes of this chapter, the term ‘‘soft matter’’is taken to include gels, polymer solutions, liquid crystals, micellar systems and nanoparticulate suspensions. All possess a wide range of molecular mobilities within a sample and can require a range of NMR techniques for their full characterisation. Complementary analytical techniques such as rheometry, X-ray diffraction and gel permeation chromatography can be used to support and validate the conclusions drawn from the NMR. Examples are highlighted in the text, although a comprehensive review is beyond the scope of this chapter. In many cases, a comprehensive analysis of a soft-matter system is neither desired nor performed and NMR is employed to answer a specific research question. For this reason, the chapter is arranged in terms of the NMR techniques themselves, rather than the specific classes of soft matter. It is hoped that this chapter provides a useful resource for anyone contemplating the use of NMR to interrogate their soft matter systems. Solution-and solid-state NMR techniques are discussed in Sections 2 and 3 respectively. The observation of spin-1
