The production of radioactive and toxic gases by electron accelerators used for research purposes was the subject of several investigations and under certain conditions of use special precautions must be taken to reduce exposure of staff and public to acceptable levels. Similar accelerators when used for medical purposes have limitations on their use in terms of dose-rate, total dose and interval between treatment that reduce the expected concentration of these gases. The atmospheric environment about a particular installation operating at 25 MV in a manner typical of medical therapeutic use is calculated. Only in exceptional circumstances involving high dose-rates, poor ventilation and long treatment distances would any significant hazard arise.
