Information about prevalence and incidence of coronary heart disease is deficient because of lack of standardized and objective methods of collection, tabulation, interpretation, and reporting of data. The ecg is the crucial objective tool in diagnosis of coronary heart disease. A classification system for ecg items is presented which embodies widely used criteria but makes no stipulation about interpretation, permits more valid comparison of data on heart disease in populations, and is susceptible to modern methods of data processing.
