During the 5th month of pregnancy, 1500 mothers were questioned about drinking habits during the month before pregnancy and smoking habits during pregnancy. From the sample, 500 infants were selected when 2 days old for operant learning tasks. The women were classed as abstainers or infrequent, moderate and heavy drinkers when their daily alcohol intake was 0.01 to 0.05, 0.06 to 0.99 and 1.0 oz or more and as nonsmokers or moderate and heavy smokers when their daily nicotine intake was up to 16 or more than 16 mg. Infants born to mothers who smoked but did not drink alcohol during pregnancy had higher performance scores for head turning and sucking. The tasks were short in duration with emphasis on a rapid response. Infants of mothers who drank and smoked even moderately had poorer performances than control infants and showed an interaction that was not predictable from the intake of alcohol or nicotine separately.
