BackgroundThe study of biological processes in porous media probably started with the advent of the biological contact basins and trickling filters, both used to treat municipal wastewater, in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Even from this early date, it was recognized by some researchers that the multiscale structure of porous media–including porous media where biological processes were present–was important. Among these was a researcher named John Baptiste Perrin.
