Recent research and theory on issues in social and personality development has moved toward an understanding of individual capacities in social and interpersonal contexts. Three elements have been highlighted in this process: emotional development, the nature and development of relationships involving children, and the moderating role of contexts as determinants of individual functioning. There is a need to study the processes involved in regulation of these forces in child and adolescent development and the interconnection between developmental processes and individual differences.
