This method is limited to rutile grains with sufficient U in order to get suitable Pb signal intensity (Zack et al., 2011). It is well known that multi collector ICPMS offers advantages in terms of higher sensitivity, flat top peak shape and simultaneous acquisition, features ideal for precise isotope ratio analyses. Some researchers have applied LA-MC-ICPMS to U–Pb rutile dating such as Vry and Baker (2006), Warren et al. (2012) and Bracciali et al. (2013), but the amount of works using this method are limited, and Vry and Baker (2006) only obtained Pb– Pb ages and no U–Pb ages. Therefore the potential of LAMC-ICPMS to rutile U–Pb dating has not been fully explored. We hereby report a new analytical protocol and the analytical results for 4 different natural rutile samples using LA-MC-ICPMS in this paper. Our results demonstrate that this technique can yield precise and accurate U–Pb dating results for rutile even with ca. 1 ppm U.
