Provides a blueprint for mental health professionals on how to conduct a thorough evaluation of sex offenders being considered for commitment under predator laws. This chapter describes the various contexts in which such evaluations might occur and the varying questions that a mental health expert must address. It provides information on how to conduct the initial evaluation, including a discussion of how up-to-date and complete records and other information about the offender can be obtained. The author also explores the task mental health professionals must undertake when they examine individuals committed under these laws to determine if they can safely be released back into society. He points out a number of practical issues, including ethical concerns, which an evaluator encounters when evaluating and testifying in these cases..(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
