Piezoelectric crystals coated with a suitable substrate can be used to detect compounds eluting from a GC column. A simple and completely portable analytical instrument operating at room temperature using a detector based on this principle is described. It incorporates the characteristics of piezoelectric crystal oscillators best suited for a detector in GC. The instrument response is rapid and proportional to sample size; its sensitivity is in the ppm concentration range. Compounds in the boiling range 40°C to 200°C are separated on columns less than 20 inches in length with short retention times and large responses. With a response that increases as a function of molecular weight, the P/Z GC is especially applicable to low temperature chromatography so that compounds normally unstable above room temperature can be analyzed.
