Abundant formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) renal biopsy tissues have been preserved in pathology archives around the world. Archived FFPE samples represent an invaluable resource for molecular studies of renal diseases. 1, 2 The ability to use modern genomic and transcriptomic methods with nucleic acids extracted from FFPE tissues would allow enormous archives of routinely stored tissues to be used for translational research. In recent years, technological progress, such as the development of sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) systems, permits rapid and specific quantification of small amounts of mRNA. 3, 4 In this study, we compared two kits for extracting RNA from renal biopsy FFPE tissues at two different storage time points: 5 and 10 years.
