The utilization of chlorine in the pulp and paper industry is described, referring especially to delignification'and/or bleaching with moist chlorine directly from the electrolytic cells, in comparison with chlorinated water and active oxygen from hypochlorites. The history, origin, development, and evolution of the Pomilio chlorination process are briefly outlined, emphasizing the continuity of operation and the interlocking steps in the whole cycle. The outstanding advantages of this new process are pointed out and future developments suggested. The process has, as yet, not been introduced into the United States.INTRODUCTION.
