H. annuus and H. petiolaris are wide-spread weeds in N. America. Hybrid swarms between the 2 spp. which have been found in 3 localities are analyzed. Comparison of the synthetic with the putative natural hybrids tends to indicate that the latter are truly of hybrid origin. The haploid chromosome number of 17 for H. petiolaris is reported for the first time. Cytological studies of the hybrid have revealed irregularities at meiosis and consequently the hybrid is rather highly sterile. Hybridization between the 2 spp. appears to have resulted in introgression which has greatly increased the variability of the 2 spp. without any tendency for fusion into a single highly variable species. Introgression may have been of importance in creating superior genotypes which have furthered the ability of the 2 spp. to spread as weeds.
