This volume is the proceedings of a symposium held June 12-16, 1973, at Unieux-Firminy, France. The proceedings consists of 89 invited papers under five topical headings: Stress Corrosion Cracking and Hydrogen Embrittlement in Industrial Circumstances, Models of Stress Corrosion Cracking, Models of Hydrogen Embrittlement, Macro and Micro Continuum Aspects of Crack Propagation, Low Strength Steels, High Strength Steels, and Iron-Chromium-Nickel Alloys. The volume also contains a number of conference evaluations by selected attendees. In addition, each session was evaluated by its chairmen and each report was presented as an introduction to the chapter. A complete discussion which followed each presentation is also contained in this volume. This volume is a complete account of research in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of iron base alloys as of 1973. The one very apparent, serious flaw is that the volume was published five years after the conference. It is felt that a five year delay in publication is intolerable. Both stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement are dynamic areas of investigation where rapid dissemination of information is vital. This volume, being over five years in preparation, is handicapped by being outdated prior to its publication. The first 54 pages of the volume are devoted to selected evaluations of the conference. The evaluations are written by acknowledged experts who in some cases give an excellent overview of the problems and progress within a particular topic pertaining to SCC and HE. Two evaluations are particularly noteworthy= the evaluation of SCC and HE from the viewpoint of defect solid state by JP Hirth and evaluations of failure mechanisms by EN Pugh. The quality of the papers in these proceedings is outstanding. It is apparent that the papers were reviewed prior to publication which results in a carefully prepared volume. Furthermore the micrographs and charts were reproduced very well, resulting in clear, sharp illustrations. A particularly noteworthy session was the Models of HE. This was by far the most comprehensive session and consisted of 15 papers. Although some of the papers are now outdated, many of the present models of HE are presented in this volume with great clarity. In summary, this volume is a valuable collection of papers on SCC and HE with particular emphasis on iron base alloys. Many of the researchers who are actively studying SCC and HE will be familiar with the contents of much of this volume. The papers are of high quality and are carefully reviewed, thus making the book a good reference to the phenomena of SCC and HE. As noted, the volume is handicapped by a five-year lag between the meeting date and the proceedings publication. This is somewhat mitigated by the addition of careful conference and session evaluations which digests the large amount of information (1136 pages) presented in the conference to a more manageable amount (74 pages). This volume is a useful compendium of information concerning research in SCC and HE, although its impact is limited by being outdated prior to publication.
