The eyes of chick embryos at 5 days of incubation were operated on in 3 ways: a) the lens was removed through a limbic incision which subsequently healed; b) the lens was removed from the eye and immediately replaced; c) the lens was removed from the eye and replaced by a 5-day lens which had been boiled for 15 minutes. Eye diameter, corneal diameter, and vitreous weight were measured as a function of time following these procedures. In the absence of the lens, or in the presence of a boiled lens, the growth of the eye was markedly reduced, and vitreous substance failed to accumulate. Removal of the lens followed by its immediate replacement resulted in normal growth of the eye. The results are interpreted as follows: a) the neural retina grows and differentiates independently of the lens; b) the cornea is dependent upon the living lens for its growth and differentiation until at least the 5th day of incubation. The cornea is gradually replaced by other tissues if the lens if removed; c) the normal growth and change in shape of the pigmented epithelium, choroid coat and sclera require the presence of the lens. The influence of the lens on these 3 coats is mediated by its control of the accumulation of vitreous substance in the vitreous chamber.
