NATTH BHAMARAPRAVATHI, M7 I NTESTINAL LACTASE (f3-galactosidase), necessary for tile breakdown and absorption of lactose, tile sugar component of milk, d!eclines to low or absent levels in the postweaning period in several species of mammals (1, 2). The California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus), whose milk does not contain lactose, does not have an intestinal lactase at all (3-5). These data suggest that lactase in mammals may be an adaptive enzyme. Tile failure of the postsuckling decline to occur in man would be consistent with this hypothesis because of the continued! inclusion of milk and milk products in the duet after infancy.
