Editor–Blood transfusion can save lives and provide clinical benefit, but transfusions may be associated with adverse clinical sequelae. The National Patient Safety Agency1 and Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (2005) 2 require that all staff who administer blood receive competency-based training. Such training should be a key element of medical undergraduate teaching.
