The solubilization of two long-chain nitroxide free-radical probes by sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles has been studied by electron spin resonance. The rotational correlation times of the probes were measured over the concentration range 0-5% sodium dodecyl sulfate in water. Above the critical micelle concentration the probes associate with the micelles and the tumbling rates of the probes are reduced as a result of interactions with the micelles. Solubility and coupling constant data are also reported. The data suggest a dynamic model of solubilization in which the nitroxide probes tumble much more rapidly than a hypothetical rigid micelle. The nitroxide groups experience a relatively polar time-averaged environment. These results are consistent with a previous study using quite dissimilar nitroxide probes.
