2 Stroke June 2018 gyrus at 1-day poststroke, M2 protein expression of YM-1 (chitinase-like 3), insulin growth factor-1, and galectin-3 was increased which correlated with improved neurological recovery. A later study suggested that MSC transplantation into the lateral ventricle of stroked rats decreased infarct volume and increased functional recovery by increasing IL-10 and decreasing TNF expression in the brain. 16 These M2-polarizing actions have been confirmed in several experimental stroke studies, which were all associated with improved neurological function. 21, 30 Thus, the observed beneficial actions of SCs are likely partly because of skewing microglia/macrophages toward a neuroprotective and neuroregenerative phenotype (Table).
