ABSTRACT Ten geographically restricted vertebrate faunas are recognized in late Cenozoic deposits of northwestern Mexico. The late Hemphillian Yepomera fauna of Chihuahua with 27 mammal genera and the Irvingtonian El Golfo of Sonora with 23 mammal genera are the most diverse and most securely placed in a temporal framework among the ten late Cenozoic faunas of northwestern Mexico. The presently known Hemphillian (early Pliocene) vertebrate record of northwestern Mexico indicates an abundance and diversity of both horses and cricetid rodents, and suggests a center of diversificacion for these mammal groups in Mexico prior to the Great American Interchange.
