Relapse in malaria is the reappearance of parasitemia in a sporozoite-induced infection following adequate blood schizontocidal therapy. The mechanism of relapse and the role of e.e. [extra-erythrocytic?] bodies are discussed. A relapse results from the maturation of tissue schizonts, but the time of their maturation, i.e., early or late, is determined by the genetic makeup of the individual sporozoite. Plasmodium cynomolgi, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. fieldi, P. simiovale, P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. inui, P. knowlesi, P. elongatum, P. gallinaceum, mammals, primates and humans are mentioned.
