A fast preamplifier was built with discrete JFET and operational amplifier for high-sensitivity fission chamber detector. Noise characteristics of preamplifier and detector were researched through measuring equivalent noise charge, processing the preamplifier output and analyzing pulse height. Its rise time is 56 ns with total input capacitance of 810 pF which includes preamplifier, detector and 5-meter-long cable. Considering the rise time and noise characteristics, the most suitable shaping time is 0. 1 μ s.
