Repetitive focal cathodal stimulation applied to the depth of the motor cortex causes facilitation and inhibition of monosynaptic reflexes of forearm muscle nerves with much smaller currents than surface anodal stimulation of anesthetized cats. Low threshold points for a given muscle nerve are confined within a restricted zone within the gray matter whereas the threshold increases in the white substance. At the limits of effective zones, threshold usually elevates suddenly. Shapes of the effective zones in cross section are irregular and the diameters range from a few hundred [mu]to a few mm, the average being one mm. The lowest threshold currents found were 2.0 [mu]A for facilitation and 4.0 [mu]A for inhibition. Pyramidal transection abolished these low threshold cortical effects. Activation of a few pyramidal neurons at the focal point may result in altered excitability of a given motoneuron pool.
