Extracts were made from mature larvae of Dasyneura urticae. and also from their heads only. This extract was injected into leaf bases of Urtica dioica. Growth at the site of the injection was noted in 12 out of 150 injections with whole larva extract, and in 9 out of 50 with head-only extract. This growth did not resemble normal galls of D. urticae, but consisted of a thickening of the parenchyma, with no nuclear irregularities. Evidently the zoological contribution to gall formation is not confined to stimulants introduced at the time of oviposition or secreted only by newly hatched larvae, but cell division is promoted by a chemical present in fully grown larvae of a host-specific cecidomyid.
