A Comparison Analysis of Translation Techiques of Scientific Term in Translation Draft and Translation Edited Draft in Science Book Translation for Children Book of Life, Plants Series and Its Impacts Toward to Translation Quality. Thesis Supervisor I: Prof. Drs. M.R. Nababan, M.Ed., M.A., Ph.D. Thesis Supervisor II: Prof. Dr. Djatmika, M.A. Master Degree in Linguistics Majoring in Translation Studies, Postgraduate Program, Sebelas maret University. This research is conducted by analyzing scientific terms in Science Book for Children Book of Life, Plants Series (SL) and scientific terms translated by translator (TL1) and translation edited draft edited by editor (TL 2). The aims of this research are to describe: (1) kinds of scientific terms in SL, TL 1 and TL 2, (2) translation techniques used to translate scientific terms in SL into TL 1 and to edit scientific terms in TL 1 to TL 2, (3) the impacts of translation techiques toward the quality of TL 1 and TL 2, (4) comparison of translation quality between TL 1 and TL 2. This is a descriptive-qualitative study. The source of data are documents, SL, TL 1, TL 2 and informants who asessed the quality of translations. The data are scientific terms in source languange, scientific terms translation and editted scientific terms and the context. The other data is the information about the translation quality given by informants. The techniques of data collection are document analysis, questionaire and interview. The data were analyzed by using etnography method composed by Spradley. It is found that scientific terms in SL are in the form of words and phrases. These scientific terms are translated into target language by finding equivalent words, naturalizing scientific terms into target language and borrowing scientific terms from the target language. The translation techniques used to translate scientific terms from SL into TL1 are: established-equivalence, naturalized borrowing, pure borrowing, literal, amplification and generalization. Established-eqivalence applications result in accurate, acceptable and readable translations. Meanwhile, the translation techniques used to edit scientific terms in TL 1 into TL 2 are: established-equivalence, naturalized borrowing, pure borrowing, literal, amplification and reduction. Established-eqivalence applications result in accurate, acceptable and readable translations. The research findings show that the majority of translation techniques used are able to create accurate, acceptable and readable translations. Moreover, the comparison of translation quality shows that TL 2 has better quality than TL1. Keywords: scientific terms, science book translation for children, translaton techniques, accuracy, acceptability and readability.
