Study of the interactions between deformation and metamorphic processes is fundamental to the understanding of the origin of fabrics and foliations developed in tectonites. Mineral changes that accompany deformation may exert an important influence on the rheological behavior of rocks, and deformation processes play a significant role in the mechanisms of mineral reactions that take place in a deforming aggregate (White and Knipe, 1978; Brodie and Rutter, this volume). Recent studies that have combined microstructural and microchemical analyses have been able to outline the important facets of these interactions and highlight areas requiring further attention (e.g., Bell and Vernon, 1979; Beach, 1980; Kerrich et al., 1980; Knipe, 1981; Rubie, 1983; Rutter, 1983). Most studies of mylonite foliations developed along ductile fault zones have concentrated on establishing the deformation mechanisms and strain paths from crystallographic fabrics, together with estimating stress levels from microstructural features (White et al., 1980; Weathers et al., 1979; Garcia Celma, 1982; Lister and Price, 1978; Law et al., 1984).
