Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) present in periodontal pockets may play a role in human periodontal diseases. An early report has indicated that SCFA may penetrate oral mucosa, since junctional epithelium is presently considered to be highly permeable to a wide range of compounds, and since SCFA may be pharmacologically characterized by the presence of both polar and non-polar groups. it may be postulated that SCFA may diffuse from subgingival plaque in to periodontal tissues, thus leading the way to potentially damaging effects on the periodontium.
