A copper “band-shell,” similar to the shell or thimble crown, has recently been made available. It offers certain advantages over the standard copper band for making an impression of a single prepared tooth with modeling compound or elastomer. The band-shell has a “lid” with a single perforation and is supplied with a festooned border. It is supplied in the same gau, ye and length as that of the standard bands.* The lid eliminates the need to plug one end while making an impression with an elastomeric material. In making a compound impression, it confines the impression material and permits improved direction and control during heating, seating, and removal. The band-shell also assists in tissue retraction.PREANNEALED BAND-SHELL AND MODELING COMPOUND The festooned margin of the band aids in selecting and adapting the band and facilitates its placement for preliminary fittings. 1. After careful festooning, bevel the edges of the band, and mark its facial surface for identification. Indent the “lid” to provide a raised rim for finger 01 fingernail holds in seating (Fig. 1). The lid should clear the prepared incisal 01 occlusal surface of the tooth by at least 1/4 inch. Trial seat the finished band several times.
