The effects of chromosome doubling upon leaf demography, flower production, biomass and response breadth on a soil moisture gradient of 3 cultivars [McAllesteri, Pink Beauty and Blue Beauty] of P. drummondii, each cultivar being represented by 2 cytotypes, were investigated. Increased chromosome number produced slower growth rates. Leaf and plant longevity, a tendency to flower later and less synchronously, and produce fewer flowers, increased. The loss of the ability to reproduce in hydric environments occurred in all tetraploids. Other factors such as degree of response breadth, overlap and increased vigor due to increased chromosome number were genotype-dependent. Level of polyploidy had no effect upon the number of pre-reproductive deaths.
