Sinusoidal currents of frequencies from 9,000 to 100,000/sec. produce, at threshold strength, a skin sensation at the moment of closing the current which can be described as a weak electric shock. Since large electrodes were used, the author assumes for various reasons that the observed sensation is caused by excitation of cutaneous nerves and not by excitation of sense organs in the skin. The threshold strength needed for this shock sensation increases with increase in the frequency. With stimulations by currents above threshold strength, the initial shock sensation is followed by a prickling sensation of diminishing strength but lasting for secs. or even mins. The duration of this prickling sensation depends on the frequency (lower ones more effective than the higher) and on the strength of the currents. Occasionally a shock sensation is caused at the moment the currents are interrupted, probably due to rectification effect of the tissues. The initial shock sensation is produced only when the currents last at least for several millisecs., which means that a hundred or more oscillations of the currents occurred. The author concludes, therefore, that the excitability of the nerves increases temporarily under the influence of an alternating current (pseudo-cateletrotonic effect), while later on the nerves are inhibited. However, during this inhibition, the nerves can be excited by increasing the current strength or by superimposing a current of a lower frequency. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Ernst Fischer
