This paper explains the semantic translation and communicative translation put forward by Peter Newmark,and analyzes the translation strategies adopted by Anthony C.Yu and W.J.F.Jenner in translating Buddhism Elements in Journey to the West,aiming to compare the different effects in cultural transfer.The author holds that semantic translation adopted by Anthony C.Yu is more efficient when he expected to spread Chinese culture,however,W.J.F.Jenner preferred to practice communicative translation for his intention is to make the translation more readable for western readers.
