The approach used for wave–current generation and absorption is crucial for simulating waves propagating on currents in a numerical tank. An effective method for wave–current generation and absorption is proposed and validated in this study. In this approach, the numerical tank is divided into five regions: two linear, one nonlinear, and two transitional regions. A linear region is set at both ends of the numerical tank. In the middle of the numerical tank, a nonlinear region is used to simulate waves in the presence of currents. A transition region is introduced between the linear and nonlinear regions. An efficient damping function is implemented to absorb the reflected waves. To validate the new method for wave–current generation and absorption, numerical simulations of waves in the presence of currents are performed. Three types of currents are considered: zero-vorticity, constant non-zero vorticity and variable vorticity. The results indicate that the new method for wave–current generation and absorption is effective and applicable for simulating waves in the presence of ambient currents.
