A 1st order model use-ful for the description of the growth of populations of animals, whose individuals can be classified into morphologically recognisable stages, is proposed and compared with one in which the individuals are classified into age groups. The model is fitted to census data collected from populations of the cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricome (F.) growing under 3 different experimental regimes.
