Bicelles are a versatile class of model membranes known to align in magnetic fields. Bicelles were originally developed for use in solid-state NMR studies of membraneassociated molecules. More recently, they have been adapted for use in solution NMR as a way of obtaining access to rich classes of structural data for water soluble molecules and complexes. Additional innovations have brought this class of model membranes to the point where they may also be ripe for exploitation in non-NMR-based structural studies.
