Transganglionic axonal and terminal degeneration occurred reproducibly in the brain stem spinal trigeminal nucleus at specific ages in kittens during shedding of deciduous and eruption of permanent teeth. The distributional pattern and sequence of degeneration is similar to that in adult cats after tooth pulp extirpations. Comparative representation for tooth afferent fibers in the brain stem implies the possibility of central plasticity associated with peripheral changes in innervation during tooth eruption.
