The California mastiff bat, Eumops perotis, can regulate its body temperature between 30[degree] and 34[degree] C at ambient temperatures from 0[degree] to 30[degree] C. Eumpos tolerates ambient temperatures at least as high as 39[degree] C without heat stress, although above 30[degree] C body temperature rises by 0.69%C increase in ambient temperature. During the winter Eamops engages in daily torpor, rather than prolonged hibernation. Minimal oxygen consumption of bats maintaining a high body temperature occurs at 31 [degree]C and is only 55 per cent of the value predicted on the basis of body weight. Eumops conforms to Newton''s Law of Cooling, since the metabolismambient temperature curve extrapolates to a value close to the body temperature. Thermal conductance is comparable to that of most other homeotherms of similar size. Resting heart rate is minimal at 30[degree]C and increases both above and below this ambient temperature. Although oxygen pulse increases as ambient temperature decreases, the main circulatory adjustment to meet metabolic demands at low ambient temperatures is the rise in heart rate. Shivering appears at an ambient temperature of 23[degree] C and increases in a linear manner with decreasing ambient temperature.
